Exploring Canadian Geography (Grade 9)

This course builds on learning in Grades 7 and 8 in geography. Students will explore relationships within and between Canada's natural and human systems and how they interconnect with other parts of the world. Students will also examine environmental and economic issues related to topics such as natural resources and industries, careers, land use and responsible development, and sustainability. Students will apply geographic thinking, use the geographic inquiry process, and use geospatial technologies throughout their investigations.

Unit 1: Geographic Inquiry and Skills

Students learn geographic inquiry methods and develop skills in map reading, data interpretation, and geospatial technologies used to study geographic patterns and relationships.

Unit 2: Canada's Natural Environment

Students examine Canada's physical geography, including landforms, climate, and ecosystems. They explore how natural processes shape Canada's landscapes and environments.

Unit 3: Natural Resources and Industries

Students investigate Canada's natural resources and major industries. They explore how resources are used, managed, and developed in ways that support economic growth and sustainability.

Unit 4: Population and Settlement

Students examine population patterns, migration, and settlement in Canada. They analyze how geography influences where people live and how communities develop.

Unit 5: Environmental Challenges and Sustainability

Students investigate environmental issues affecting Canada and explore strategies for responsible resource use and sustainable development.

Unit 6: Culminating Geographic Investigation

Students complete a geographic inquiry project that integrates course concepts. They analyze geographic issues, evaluate evidence, and communicate findings using geographic tools and methods.
