Challenge and Change in Society (Grade 12)

This course focuses on the use of social science theories, perspectives, and methodologies to investigate and explain shifts in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviour.

Unit 1: Sociological Theories

Students examine major sociological theories and consider how they are used to explain social behaviour and change.

Unit 2: Socialization

Students explore how individuals are shaped by social institutions, relationships, and cultural expectations.

Unit 3: Deviance and Social Control

Students investigate how societies define deviance and the ways social control is maintained.

Unit 4: Social Inequality

Students examine issues related to class, race, gender, and other forms of inequality in society.

Unit 5: Social Change

Students analyze how societies respond to and are transformed by political, economic, and cultural change.

Unit 6: Culminating Sociological Study

Students complete a final investigation applying sociological concepts to a contemporary social issue.
